Scientists at IBM Research demonstrated the reliable way of storing 3 bits of data per cell with the new memory technology called Phase Change Memory (PCM). Current memory landscape have span with more number of venerable DRAM in the hard disk drives for the ubiquitous flash.
Past several years, the PCM have attracted industry’s attention for the potential universal memory technology that is based on the combination of non-volatility, read/write speed, endurance and density.
PCM do not lose the data even when the power is cut off unlike DRAM. Choosing this advance technology would also endure for more than 10 million write cycles when compared to the average flash USB stick, that only could write 3,000 write cycles.
Research breakthrough also states that fast and easy storage would easily capture more growth that would enhance the mobile devices along with the Internet of Things.
IBM scientists also stores with the standalone PCM and hybrid applications so that it can be combined with the PCM and flash storage together. PCM also have the most extreme type of fast cache. When the Smartphone is using the operating system stored in PCM then enabling the phone for launching the stored memory within few seconds are possible. Entire databases are much easier for storing so that PCM could be blazing fast with its most advanced query processing with the time critical online applications like financial transactions.
Machine learning algorithms are also used for the large datasets that will speed the boost of reducing the latency overhead and reading the data between any type of iterations.
PCM materials have two different types of 2 stable states with the amorphous without the clear defined structure as well as crystalline in the structure phases.
Low and high electrical conductivity would be respectively. For storing the ‘0’ or ‘1’ called as bits on the PCM cell for the medium or higher electrical current that is applied for materials. ‘0’ programmed that is written in amorphous phase or ‘1’ with crystalline phase. Low voltage is applied with the re-writable Blue-ray Discs store videos. IBM and other institutes successfully demonstrated with the ability storing the 1 bit per cell in PCM.
